Multidisciplinary Collaboration: (KDI)

Principal Investigators: Sara Kiesler (Carnegie Mellon University), Pamela Hinds (Stanford University), Suzanne Weisband (University of Arizona)

NSF Award #9872996

This multi-disciplinary collaboration project was a joint effort among researchers from three different universities examining collaborations within and among disciplines, groups and organizations using a variety of research strategies. A series of studies tested the role of geographic and functional distance in the appropriation of ideas, privacy, attribution of credit, and productivity of collaborative projects.

Related Project: Workshop on Distributed Work

Principal Investigators: Sara Kiesler (Carnegie Mellon University) and Pamela Hinds (Stanford University)

NSF Award #0000566

Researchers and graduate students formed an NSF working group to discuss geographically distributed work and related phenomena such as distributed groups with multidisciplinary and cross-functional membership, and teams with temporary, part-time, and contingent workers. This workshop led to a book, Distributed Work (MIT Press, 2002).

Related Project: KDI Assessment

Principal Investigators: Sara Kiesler (Carnegie Mellon University) and Jonathon Cummings (MIT)

NSF Award IIS-9872996.

NSF sponsored a systematic evaluation of the KDI, not just to audit the program but also to serve as a diagnostic tool. What worked best, and what should be managed differently? Researchers from all 71 KDI projects were invited to attend an NSF-sponsored workshop to discuss their experiences and to participate in a follow-up survey. If you wish to see the results of this assessment of NSF's KDI program, you can view the KDI website at http://www.cise.nsf.gov/kdi/ and download the final report (PDF) at http://www.cise.nsf.gov/kdi/links.html.
